IL-11 and its receptor, IL-11Ra, are expressed in human cancers; however, the functional role of IL-11 in tumor progression is not known. We found that IL11 is a hypoxia-inducible, VHL-regulated gene in human cancer cells and that expression of IL11 mRNA was dependent, at least in part, on HIF-1.

Erin Rebo Pikul Creates Awareness for Kidney Cancer

Pikul’s husband, Frank, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2010. Since that time, he participated in a clinical trial at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, underwent surgery and treatment, and is now doing well. The experience prompted Erin to create the Renal Race as a way to support the research and advocacy of the Kidney Cancer Association.
